Prom Safety Tips
For teens, there are a number of things you can do to ensure your safety and be able to have a fun and safe time at prom. It is important to plan ahead, so that you make sure you have a safe plan for the entire night. Discuss these plans with your family and friends; remind your friends about peer pressure and things to consider to have a safe night.
For people under the age of twenty-one, alcohol is illegal. Arrest, injury, or death can occur with alcohol use. Do not accept drinks from anyone; if you leave your drink, get a new one. Do not leave your possessions unattended. Identify common warning signs of alcohol poisoning and drug intoxication, and contact 911 if one of these are suspected. Do not let others drink and drive.
For parents, it is important to know your child's plans for prom. Obtain cell phone numbers for the people your child will be with during pre and post prom. Contact other parents regarding activities that will be taking place. Understand who is sponsoring prom activities and ensure that alcohol or drugs will not be involved. If a limousine service is used, make sure that no alcohol will be allowed.
Discuss events and important information with your child. Make sure your child is aware of guidelines and a curfew, including consequences if the curfew or check-in times are not met. It is important to talk to your child regarding the consequences and dangers of underage drinking and driving. Also make sure your child is aware of the dangers of club drugs, warning signs, and who to notify for assistance.
For all events throughout the night, including the actual prom, make sure you have as much information as possible. You should be aware of addresses, phone numbers, and the events taking place. Have as much contact with other parents as possible in order to ensure you child's safety at prom.
