Formal Dress Styles

Formal Dress StylesFormal dress styles refer to formal wear or attire suitable for formal events, generally known as “black tie“ events. Formal events include many special occasions, such as, balls, formal weddings, play and movie premieres, events held to honor dignitaries, operas, entertainment award shows (Emmy, Oscar, Tony, Globe), and high school proms. Because there are degrees of formality, the event invitation is the best guide for determining the most appropriate attire for the event.

The dress code for formal “black tie” events was originally very strict and rigid. For the men, tuxedos were required. Along with the classic tuxedo jacket, the men wore satin-striped trousers, a cummerbund, and black bow tie to be perfectly outfitted for the occasion. Black and white was the customary formal colors. For the women, long dresses or gowns were a must.

Today’s formal dress styles are more relaxed. The underlying theme for modern fashion is more comfort and more individuality. Men and women have an opportunity to be more creative and flexible in their formal attire. With the modern changes, evolves the “black tie optional” events. Men have the option of wearing a dark suit and a regular tie (any color) instead of a tuxedo and black bow tie. Women have the option of wearing a long dress or gown, cocktail dress, or dressy evening separates. A classy look for a couple is color-coordinated outfits.

The sky is the limit when it comes to choices of women’s formal dress styles. There are strapless, those with spaghetti straps, low backs, alluring side or back slits. Plus, there are so many luxury fabrics to choose from, such as, chiffon, velvet, satin, silk, or beaded for that extra sparkle. There are a wide range of colors and styles to flatter any face and figure. Prices also vary, so the smart shopper can find a formal dress style to fit any budget. Shoes to match the dress and simple or bold jewelry are the perfect complement to the formal dress.

Elegance is the key at formal occasions. The goal is to look dignified, polished, and elegant at these special events.
